To this end, we are looking for a UX/UI Designer to work collaboratively with developers and researchers to establish excellent user interfaces, UI components, and intuitive features. You will have the opportunity to provide your expertise to every stage of the design process, from wireframing to final product. The ideal candidate is proactive, comfortable with minimal management, and feels at ease in a dynamic start-up environment.

In the United States today, 40% of premature deaths are caused by behaviors that could be changed, one in three families has no retirement savings at all, and half of college students drop out before earning a degree.  Behavioral science has the potential to radically change all of these outcomes—and more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain the overall design direction, UX/UI guidelines, while implementing and maintaining design standards across platform in accordance with our style guide
  • Lead full suite of user research testing from research phase through launch
  • Work closely and collaboratively with a team of designers, product managers, engineers, and researchers
  • Design and craft pixel-perfect interfaces with a high attention to detail
  • Practice a highly efficient, iterative design process with light support documentation
  • Create wireframes, low to hi-fidelity prototypes, and all product visual design components
  • Brainstorm and prototype navigation solutions for flexible, dense layouts
  • Expand upon existing template designs, UI components, and style guidelines
  • Design with an awareness and understanding of browser sizes, device capabilities, and product functionality
  • Design while utilizing web standards, design-thinking, and UX best practices

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree (in Design, Interactive CS, or related) and 5+ years experience designing user interfaces for interactive online products
  • Experience conducting full user research testing throughout full lifecycle of product
  • Fluency with Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience with prototyping tools such as Omnigraffle, proto.io, Balsamiq, or HTML5
  • Clear understanding of responsive web design and flexible layouts
  • Experience designing for multi-platform products (web, native apps, tablet, desktop, etc.)
  • Excellent conceptual and problem-solving skills illustrating a thoughtful design process
  • A strong online portfolio displaying UX/UI solutions and delivered projects
  • Excellent systems thinker with a talent for implementing consistent design patterns across products and platforms
  • Solid understanding of how your designs are built by engineering teams
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, agile, and deadline-driven environment
  • Comfort working with diverse team to rapidly iterate, build, test, and launch features
  • Experience in rapid prototype iteration, usability testing methods, and front-end UI engineering best practices

  • Identify professional development opportunities for team members.

  • Strong technical experience in basic microbiological techniques of enumeration and differentiation is required – Colony Forming Units, Most Probable Number, Flow Cytometry, Differential Plating, Light Microscopy, etc.

  • Familiarity with quality systems (ISO9001, ISO 22000, etc.) strongly preferred.

About us:
We are a VC-funded, commercial stage startup developing a Stanford University technology for measuring protein expression involving signal processing, imaging, and motion control.

 

The Role:
You are a mechanical engineer. You have designed UHV instruments and put them into production before. You thrive in a startup environment where you get to work with really smart people from a wide variety of disciplines, and are willing to help figure out the design and specifications. You like an environment where you can move fast without a lot of external requirements, because you are capable of putting in place appropriate structure and following best practices without people looking over your shoulder.


Our Ideal Candidate Has:

  • BS or MS in mechanical engineering or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Fifteen years of design and development experience in:
    • XY stage design including motors and bearings for UHV
    • Mechanism design, especially sample handling
    • Actuators, electric and pneumatic
    • Machined plastic and metal components
    • Welding and weld prep for UHV
    • Electrical feedthroughs, connectors and cables suitable for use in vacuum
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling; SolidWorks experience required.
  • Excellent drafting skills with good knowledge of GD&T standards.
  • Familiarity with materials and processes suitable for UHV equipment
  • Knowledge of modern methods for making prototype and production parts.
  • Ability to create and adhere to project schedules.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Automated test writing (e.g. python scripts) and control system tuning a plus

 


You Will:

  • Conceive, design, build, and evaluate a UHV stage, load lock, and sample transfer mechanism.
  • Develop designs using best practices including design for manufacture (DFM) and design for service (DFS).
  • Create documentation including mechanical drawings, assembly procedures, test plans, test reports, and design reviews.
  • Source and procure prototype parts and components.
  • Support the release of production worthy design files.
  • Transfer engineering assembly methods to manufacturing contractor in preparation for production.
  • Debug functionality and reliability and iterate design to correct issues
