SurveyMonkey: Frontend Engineer – Business Solutions

Authentic Jobs - Full Stream -

Full-time

(Remote, San Mateo)

About SurveyMonkey

Founded in 1999, SurveyMonkey is the world’s leading platform for turning people’s voices and opinions into actionable data — People Powered Data. Whether it’s with customers, employees, or a target market, SurveyMonkey helps curious individuals and companies — including 99% of the Fortune 500 — have conversations at scale with the people who matter most. It’s People Powered Data that allows them to understand not only “what” is happening, but “why.” SurveyMonkey’s 700+ employees throughout North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific are dedicated to powering the curious.

About SurveyMonkey Business Solutions

SurveyMonkey’s platform is used for a myriad of purposes across a broad spectrum of industries. That leaves ample opportunity to build targeted products that solve a specific problem. That’s where our team comes in. We’re responsible for building standalone solutions that address the needs of businesses.

So far, we’ve built three solutions:

  • SurveyMonkey CX - Measure and improve customer satisfaction
  • SurveyMonkey Engage - Understand and foster employee engagement
  • TechValidate - Publish 3rd-party verified customer proof

We operate each solution as a small startup within the larger SurveyMonkey organization. This affords us flexibility to quickly try new ideas, but with the resources of larger company. Our goal is to build high growth, profitable businesses that leverage the enormous user base of SurveyMonkey.

The Team

Our ten person team is responsible for building products from soup to nuts. We often wear many hats and work across both the technical stack and departments. You’ll have the opportunity to work with people who have successfully launched (and sold) products.

Most of us choose to focus on one solution at a time. We feel this allows us to fully embrace and understand our customer needs and develop a deep technical understanding of the problem domain. However, we are also committed to sharing our work - not just with each other, but via open source contributions to our code library, Pano.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for an experienced front-end engineer who has worked on Ruby on Rails applications. You should be a CSS expert and appreciate the clarity of Haml and Sass. Interest beyond the view layer is always welcome - either delving into controllers or models, or bringing an eye for design. Experience with HTML emails will also come in handy.

You should be fluent in Javascript. While we are skeptical of Javascript frameworks, we embrace ES6. Knowledge of D3 is a plus. Understanding of Turbolinks will serve you well.

Overall, you’ll need a strong command of web standards and cross-browser compatibility. You should be able to demonstrate relevant past experience working on complex web applications.

Why Work Here?

We are a remote team. As long as your work day overlaps the Pacific timezone by at least four hours, where you live and work and up to you. You will be asked to travel a few times a year for a full team meeting. We use this time not only for larger planning discussions, but also for a little social interaction. In the past year, we’ve gone bowling in Phoenix and made sushi in San Francisco.

We are strong believers in work-life balance. We know world class work can be done in just forty hours a week when distractions are minimized and the pace is sustainable. If you consider yourself to be a manager of one, this role is a great fit.

We offer competitive salaries, medical/dental benefits, generous PTO, 401k, paid holidays, and equity compensation.

SurveyMonkey: Senior UX/Product Designer – Business Solutions

Authentic Jobs - Full Stream -

Full-time

(Remote, San Mateo)

About SurveyMonkey

SurveyMonkey is the world's leading provider of web-based survey solutions, and we’re looking to transform the way people make decisions. We're a smart, passionate group of people who work hard to deliver the best survey experiences on the planet, period. We believe everyone deserves easy access to the information and insights they need to make great decisions.

We're also proud to admit that despite our incredible growth over the past 17 years, we refuse to grow up. We stay curious. We believe in good ol’ roll-up-your-sleeves scrappiness. Everyone plays an impactful role, because we’re here to make a difference. And when we say good ideas can come from anyone, we mean it.

SurveyMonkey is trusted by millions of customers, including 99% of the Fortune 500, as well as other businesses, academic institutions and organizations of all shapes and sizes. We collect over 3 million survey responses daily from people in all countries around the world.

About SurveyMonkey Business Solutions

SurveyMonkey is the world’s most popular survey platform. While it is a great general-purpose tool used by millions, there is ample opportunity for more specialized solutions. That’s where we come in. We build standalone, targeted SaaS products that bring great UX to solving more specific business problems.

To date, our 10-person team has shipped three products:

We operate each solution as a small startup within the larger SurveyMonkey organization. This affords us flexibility to quickly try new ideas, but with the resources of larger company. Our goal -- and our track record -- is to build high growth, profitable businesses that leverage the enormous user base of SurveyMonkey.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a talented designer with demonstrable experience working on user-friendly SaaS applications. Your portfolio should demonstrate the ability to design for all screen sizes from mobile to desktop. You should also be comfortable writing clear, concise UI copy.

Strong visual design, product design, usability, and communication skills are essential. Technical skills such as CSS, Javascript, and familiarity with Ruby on Rails are also a strong plus, though not required. Experience mentoring and/or managing junior designers would also be a big plus.

If you like working closely with developers and other designers and love designing data-rich visualizations, we should talk. If you think of yourself as a product designer as much as a UX designer, we should definitely talk. If you have some Tufte books on your shelf and are the kind of person others look to to tease out subtle edge cases in an interface, we should absolutely talk.

Why Work Here?

We are a remote team. As long as your work day overlaps the Pacific timezone by at least four hours, where you live and work and up to you. We’re not strangers though -- in addition to a sane amount of video calls, we meet up quarterly to get to know each other better and have some fun. In the past year, we've been bowling in Phoenix, made sushi in San Francisco, and toured a brewery.

We are strong believers in work-life balance. We know world class work can be done in just forty hours a week when distractions are minimized and the pace is sustainable. As such, you will be expected to be a manager of one.

Naturally, we offer competitive salaries and annual bonuses, medical/dental benefits, generous PTO, 401k, paid holidays, and meaningful equity compensation. We also supply you with top of the line equipment for your home office.

Finally, in a world of clunky “enterprise” software, we consider great UX and visual design to be a strategic advantage, and we need you to help us keep improving. Our track record gives our team a lot of autonomy -- this is your chance to rethink how “business solutions” should look and function, and to have fun while doing it.

Outside of work, we are well-rounded people with diverse interests from winemaking to music to sculpture. Several of us have kids (and we actually get to see them).

Join us.

Green Bits: Senior Rails Developer

Authentic Jobs - Full Stream -

Full-time

(Portland, OR) Senior Rails Developer Green Bits

Senior Rails Developer

at Green Bits

About Us:

Green Bits was founded by engineers with experience crafting global accounting software with complex compliance requirements.

In 2014, we started working with recreational marijuana retailers on a focused mission: develop a point-of-sale product that matches their unique workflows and business demands, from seed-to-sale tracking, to long checkout lines, to customer sales limits and complex inventory batch tracking.

Since then, we've taken more than 60% of the Washington state retail space and are rapidly growing into new markets. We were also first runner-up in the 2015 San Francisco TechCrunch Disrupt (anyone watch HBO's Silicon Valley?).

If you'd like to get to know us better, check out our company values. We use these values to keep ourselves in check in every decision we make.

The Role:

We are looking for engineers who want to help us define an industry that could grow to over $20B in 4 years or less. Our product team is pioneering a new way for canna-businesses to run and our goal is to provide the most efficient and profitable way to run a canna-business while simplifying legal compliance.

Automation is at the core of our engineering team, and we do not believe that we can effectively deliver product and grow as a team without it.

You Will:

Constantly be solving tough and interesting problems -- like how to provide a simplified experience for customers in different states, keeping them compliant with all the local laws, and interacting with each state’s traceability systems.

Help us run software that is the backbone of our customer's business. We do not believe downtime is acceptable and will constantly remain focused on how to minimize this possibility.

Leverage your love for the challenge of continuously delivering new features while maintaining an extremely high level of reliability to our customers.

Our Ideal Candidate Has:

  • Solid experience with Ruby on Rails, Django, or similar framework
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, demonstrated by the ability to learn new technologies quickly and to choose the right technology for the problem being solved
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A willingness to speak up if you believe we are working on the wrong things
  • Startup experience or equivalent (fast-paced, fluid, and highly accountable)

Bonus Points:

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in CS, STEM, or comparable
  • Strong understanding and experience with MySQL
  • Past experience with AWS

Angaza: Firmware/Devices Manager

Authentic Jobs - Full Stream -

Full-time

(San Francisco, CA)

Firmware/Devices Manager

About Us:

Angaza is in need of a Firmware / Devices Manager!  If you are passionate about making a difference in the world, look no further!  Angaza creates technology for selling life-changing products in underserved markets. Every day, families in more than thirty other countries, from Kenya to Nigeria to India, use technology developed by Angaza to buy solar home systems with "pay-as-you-go" (PAYG) financing. These off-grid products were designed and manufactured by an Angaza partner such as Greenlight Planet or Fosera, with Angaza collaborating to integrate PAYG functionality into the product firmware, electronics, and overall design. Intelligent devices make this story possible. Angaza develops the firmware and circuits behind PAYG intelligence, with a focus on communication technologies ranging from secure keycodes to GSM.

This Role:

This broad startup role involves four primary activities:

  • Team management: ensure that each engineer on your team has the support, development, and opportunities they need to succeed every day and to grow over time.

  • Product management: lead the design and direction of new Angaza embedded solutions, and influence key decisions about the behavior of PAYG features in partner products.

  • Project management: set and satisfy internal and external expectations about functionality, reliability, and scheduled delivery.

  • Engineering management: evolve team and partner processes for R&D, and add your own technical contributions, to create great off-grid PAYG products.

You don't need deep experience in all of these areas, but you do need it in some of them, and you should be eager for a role that encompasses them all.

Engineering Work Includes:

Electronics, firmware, and other software, but this leadership role is best suited to someone with past firmware development experience specifically.

Our Ideal Candidate Has:

  • 8+ years overall professional experience, including 2+ years hands-on firmware development experience and 1+ year(s) in some type of leadership role.

  • You think through how a product works for its end users, and you care about getting those product decisions right, even if you have not previously held product management responsibility.

  • You approach engineering and product choices in a structured way, weighing tradeoffs rather than jumping straight to the one that feels right.

  • You are eager to work directly with customers and partners. In general, you communicate well in writing and in person.
