GMB: UX / UI Designer

Full-time

(Anywhere)

Hi, we’re GMB, and we teach people how to use their bodies better.

The word “fitness” has been perverted to mean doing things you hate to impress people you don’t like with a body that’s too tired and sore to do anything fun. We’re here to change that, and we need your help.

We started out in 2010 with an email subscription form, a YouTube account, and a lot of scrambling to figure things out. Even with over 40,000 clients in 80 countries, pretty much everything about how we’ve built our company and marketed our products has been bootstrapped by a small group of deeply invested people wearing a lot of hats and learning as we went along. Even with a team of over twenty people, that’s our DNA – learning and making it work.

This year, we’re making big changes to our product and we are looking for a UX / UI Designer to join GMB. You’ll be part of a team that is helping to imagine and build new products — as well as improve existing ones.

What will be your responsibilities?
  • Design and take ownership for the user experience of our products — including creating user journeys, wireframes and interactive prototypes
  • Create high fidelity user interaction and interface designs
  • Work closely with our engineering team to ensure implementation aligns with designs
  • Develop standards and a unified style guide for your designs, to ensure a consistent user experience and to make it easy for others to implement
  • Present and communicate your ideas and designs to others in the company
  • Contribute to overall brand and design strategy
  • Be involved in various kinds of usability testing (User testing, Beta testing, A/B etc.)
  • Interact with our customers, to understand how they use our products, their goals and pain points.

To do this job, you will need:

  • Proven experience as a UX / UI Designer — backed up by a strong portfolio
  • Experience in designing high quality experiences for both mobile and desktop
  • Experience in user journey mapping, wire-framing and interactive prototypes
  • High attention to detail and a passion for keeping designs simple and efficient
  • Well rounded design skills that range from early wire frames, through to high fidelity designs
  • Proficient with design tools, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, Adobe CC, InVision, Balsamic etc
  • Good knowledge of design trends and best practices across different devices and platforms

Other Requirements & Competencies

  • Are clear on the value you’ll bring to the team.
  • Know how to follow instructions and how to be creative – and how to choose between them.
  • Speak and read/write perfect English.
  • Have a sense of humor.
  • Always work to develop a growth mindset.
  • Good at self-managing.
  • A ‘Hands On’ attitude: You are naturally curious and want to understand how things work. You also aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty and take ownership when issues arise
  • Able to work in an agile environment. This means working iteratively and a willingness to change priorities based on changing business dynamics
  • Can make things happen. You are a doer/maker as well as a planner.
  • Can manage written communication with a lot of different people

Not mandatory, but nice to have:

  • You’ve been following GMB for a while and understand what sets us apart from other fitness companies.
  • You’ve used one of our products
  • Worked within a distributed team environment
  • Experience with designing WordPress themes
  • Knowledge of front-end technologies – HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, but you can get a pretty good sense of our benefits and such here.

What’s it like working at GMB?

GMB is a kick-ass company.

GMB is about creating autonomy. We’re working to make the world a better place by teaching people to take control of what their bodies can do so they can contribute to their families and communities. We create options for exploration and self-expression.

And we work the way we practice. Like our idea of fitness and the way we deliver our programs, very little about the way we work is like what you’d find in a traditional company. Here’s how we exemplify autonomy at work:

 Work and Live Anywhere

 Set Your Own Schedule.

 Create Your Own Role.

We also take care of our people. Building a great team with full autonomy requires more than just freedom; we thrive in an environment that supports development and growth… and we bet you will too. Some of the things we value and encourage are: continuous learning, travel & facetime, as well as time off. Learn more about all our benefits here.

If you like what you’ve read so far, familiarize yourself with who we are and what we’re about before going any further. You should also listen to this interview with Andy about how we grew GMB and what’s important to us.

Want to learn more about the smart, fun people you’ll be working with? Check out our team.

If you're thinking, "I know how to use an APP; I'd be great at this," you're probably wrong. Please read everything above carefully and make sure you understand that there are some fairly complex and technical requirements.

If that all sounds like stuff you can handle, we'd love to hear from you. Please click this button, fill out the form at the bottom of the page, and make a case for why you'll be a great fit for the team.

BriteCore: UI/UX Designer

Full-time

(Springfield, MO (Remote Work Encouraged))

We are hiring for a mid-level UI/UX designer who is able to help us take complex workflows and distill them into a thoughtful experience for people using our app.

This position is on our growing design team, which works closely with our development teams as part of an iterative design process. You would have an important role in helping us redesign key parts of our app UI, and would also be part of an overall effort to create and standardize our design system.

The kind of work we do

BriteCore is essentially a CMS for insurance companies. They use it to manage all aspects of their business, including tracking policies, managing contacts and handling claims.

This means our users typically see our app more as a business tool like Microsoft Word or Google Sheets than a website (even though it is completely a web-based app). They also are using BriteCore for several hours every day, and are concerned with doing things quickly and efficiently. This, along with the complicated nature of insurance, means we deal with some complex workflows, and try to set ourselves apart from our competitors with a smooth UX that helps them navigate these tough processes.

What you might be doing

We’re looking for a team member who thinks critically about user experience, and is able to see it through with a polished interface. This means you might do things like:

- Create an aesthetically pleasing, on brand UI for a new or existing component in our design system.

- Ask in-depth questions to understand a process, and back up decisions with research and user tests.

- Iterate on designs using a variety of techniques, such as sketches, workflow diagrams and high-fidelity mockups

What it is like to work here

BriteCore is a remote-first company — even employees who live in our home city of Springfield, MO usually work from home! And most of the people you will work with are scattered across the US and the globe. This means that remote team members are just as much part of the company as local employees. We also allow a lot of flexibility in terms of time off. In return, we expect all of our employees to be productive and accountable, which means you'll work alongside a great, dedicated team.

Responsibilities
  • Create effective and beautiful interfaces that solve our user's problems

  • Iterate and improve on existing parts of the app

  • Inform design decisions with data, user testing

  • Communicate clearly

  • Welcome feedback and collaboration

  • Be friendly, confident, and patient with others

  • Self-direct

  • Stay up on industry best practices and trends

Technologies we use
  • Sketch, Balsamiq, or other wireframing tools

  • Invision

  • Adobe Creative Suite

  • HTML5

  • SCSS, PostCSS

  • GitHub

  • Command Line (previous experience a plus, but not required)

Benefits and Compensation
  • $40k-$60k based on experience and proven performance

  • Benefit from working alongside and observing a team of world-class engineers and designers

  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage including medical, dental, and vision

  • Flexible schedule

  • Relaxed work environment

  • Remote work

  • Flexible learning time — explore your ideas and new technologies on the clock

More about the company

At BriteCore, we build gorgeous, scalable, and usable cloud-based insurance software. This is a company where design is deeply valued and has a seat at the table. We have created a team of top performers developing modern systems for the insurance industry. Our team enjoys working together, and takes tremendous pride and ownership in our platform. The environment is progressive – we are building a modular design system for use across all of our products. We love great technology and design and it shows in every aspect of our product. BuySellAds: Product Manager/Designer, Fully Remote

Full-time

(Anywhere!)

Who are we?

BuySellAds operates the largest self-serve advertising marketplace on the web. We’re an adtech company empowering publishers and advertisers to connect more efficiently. We're growing fast, and we want you to be part of our team!

Don’t let the “adtech” part scare you away: our mission is to help publishers better monetize their sites so they can spend their time focusing on what they care about (their content!) rather than selling ads. We leverage tech to help broker these sales, and attempt to distance ourselves from the shady world of advertising that existed before.

We are a fully distributed/remote team, with 35+ people spread out across 30 cities in 6 countries. Our primary focus as a team is how our products can solve our user's needs.

Who are you?

We are looking for a product manager, preferably with minor technical or design chops, to join our dev team. Everyone on our dev team makes meaningful contributions that positively impact our team and our customers every day, and this role is particularly high-leverage if you're into that.

Our roles are intentionally open-ended. It's simple: tell us where you feel you provide most value. At a high level, you enjoy translating customer/stakeholder requirements to developer speak and back, and want to have an intimate attachment and contribution to our roadmap and product vision. You like ticketing, QA'ing, being involved in product design, and being responsible for deliverables/shipping.

Ideally you're comfortable working with git and making minor code changes (e.g. copy or design tweaks) locally at the very least. If you can design mockups in code, even better - we lean towards more technical product people because we believe this leads to tighter feedback loops, but this isn't a strict requirement so long as you're open to learning some stuff here.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Able to help take requirements from users through to developers and back.
  • A self-starter: remote teams carry lots of autonomy. There’s no micromanaging here.
  • A great communicator: we’re big on teaching, learning, debating, and explaining, and these things require clear, deliberate communication.
  • Wary of bullet lists with more than 3 items in job postings: we aren’t heavily process-oriented or believe in tons of structure, and if your eyes have glazed over while reading this list, you might just fit right in.

You’re likely more awesome than you think, so apply even if you only check a few of these boxes. Please note that right now we're only hiring within 3 hours of Eastern Time.

Interested?

Woohoo! To apply, send us a blurb about who you are and what you’re into through Authentic Jobs. If you’re stuck on where to start, just focus on products you've been involved with in the past and what you're looking to be doing now. (You can attach a resume too, but we’re more interested in seeing what excites you rather than a bullet list of your previous jobs.)

We do our best to make the hiring process fair and straightforward: we'll do an initial phone screen, chat through some design decisions in a mock project via Slack (our primary mode of communication), and assign a take-home assignment paired with a programmer as well. We move quickly on decisions, and we aim to respond to every applicant and provide feedback where appropriate: even if we aren’t the right fit for each other, we want you to know rather than have to second-guess.

And if we are the right fit? We’re stoked. Come build a platform to help fix advertising with us.

Job Perks: Fully remote; small team/high impact; strong, motivated team. Big on mentorship and personal growth.

StackOverflow, CodingHorror.com, NPR, and The Atlantic are just some of the sites who we’re able to help make more money - connecting them with advertisers like Adobe, Microsoft, Google, Braintree, and Atlassian who are all able to expand their reach through us.

We are a fully distributed/remote team, with 35+ people spread out across 30 cities in 6 countries. We primarily use Rails and React, as well as PHP and Go, but seek to hire developers who are language agnostic and are more interested in shipping quality code than bikeshedding it.

Who are you?

We’re looking for developers at any level (junior, intermediate, senior) to help us build out our platform. Everyone on our dev team makes meaningful contributions that positively impact our team and our customers every day - you will ship code on your very first day at BSA.

Ideally, we’re looking for someone who is:

  • Comfortable across the full stack of the development cycle: frontend, backend, database stuff, as well as following through with testing and shipping.
  • A self-starter: remote teams carry lots of autonomy. There’s no micromanaging here.

We move quickly on decisions, and we aim to respond to every applicant and provide feedback where appropriate: even if we aren’t the right fit for each other, we want you to know rather than have to second-guess.

Viva + Impulse Creative Co.: Developer with Ruby on Rails Experience

Full-time

(Anywhere)

We are looking for a remote developer to add to our team. Our agency builds websites and web applications for clients throughout the United States, and our primary development framework is Ruby on Rails. While you do not need to be a senior-level Rails expert, you should be very comfortable working with Rails 4.x and 5.x applications.

You will be responsible for building out new websites for our clients using our awesome, custom-built content management system. Most of the time, we will provide the HTML templates for integration into our CMS; but sometimes, we will ask you to build out the HTML/CSS/JS for splash pages and other simple projects. You will also be responsible for implementing ongoing website and web application updates requested by our clients.

We are building a new version of our content management system that we want you to take the lead on. We are also building a fun web application for the tourism industry and a unique web application for a prestigious university, and we want you to be a large part of those projects.

You need to be very familiar with HTML, SASS, jQuery, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and git. The more experience you have with Rails, the better. If you have an eye for design, even better. You will be jumping between projects frequently, so you won’t be bored working on one project.

Entermotion: Experienced PHP Developer

Full-time

(Anywhere)

About Us
Entermotion is a creative design and web development studio. We work on a variety of projects for our clients, from application development to identity design. We also have a few self-released products and are always looking to do more.

We're a small but diverse remote team, with people located in seven different cities across three continents.

What's the Job?
We're looking for a PHP developer to work on our web apps and websites. Your work would be divided into these focus points:

  • Structuring new web app projects from the ground up, working on prototypes, modeling, and APIs
  • Adding and maintaining features on our existing web applications
  • Occasionally maintaining and working on our simpler website projects

Our existing projects are built on custom in-house frameworks, so experience with a custom setup is highly regarded.

We manage products in different SaaS industries, from healthcare to project management.

Skills
The main focus of the job will be backend work, but some frontend skills will be necessary to get work done in our small team set up. Knowing your way around JavaScript and CSS layouts are a must (Bootstrap for the most part, although not exclusively).

Here's a set of skills we would like to see in a potential candidate. You don't need to cross off everything on this list, but the more the better! Please call attention to any additional skills you have that you think would be interesting for our workflow!

  • Deep experience with PHP and MySQL (OOP, MVC)
  • Experience working on custom frameworks
  • DevOps experience
  • Experience on 3rd party integrations (AWS, Twilio, Stripe, etc)

  • We would like an individual willing to commit 40 hours a week. Contract work would extend a minimum of 6 months assuming competency. Possibly extending to full-time employment with the right candidate.

How to Apply
Apply via Authentic Jobs interface and make sure to include:

  • 5 bullet points about why you would be a good fit
  • Salary expectations
  • Links to past work (or notes about it, if you can't share links)

We would rather have a quick, short email than a long resume to get going!

ATTENTION!
Individuals ONLY. No recruiters or agencies please.

Cornershop Creative: Backend Developer

Full-time

(Virtual, US Only)

Cornershop Creative (https://cornershopcreative.com) is seeking an awesome, U.S.-based backend developer to join our distributed team. This will be a short-term, full-time 4-6 month engagement to help with specific projects. (We hope this will turn into a permanent full-time position, but we can’t guarantee that at the moment.)

The core responsibility for this position will be building custom API integrations and scripting data migrations for WordPress-based websites and applications for our non-profit and small business clients. Tasks may include setting up WordPress custom post types, fields and taxonomies; troubleshooting server errors and migrating sites to different hosts; integrating WordPress data with third-party tools like SalesForce and Blackbaud products; and creating scripts to migrate data from other CMSes and data structures to WordPress. Additionally, this position may be responsible for developing and maintaining custom WordPress plugins.

While our primary need is strong PHP skills with solid experience building sites and applications in WordPress, our ideal candidate will have familiarity and eagerness to learn to code in other languages and on other frameworks (e.g. javascript, mobile app development, Laravel).

Our ideal candidate is a hard-working, curious troubleshooter comfortable working independently with little supervision who also enjoys working as part of a team that includes developers and non-developers. Since we're a distributed shop, you’ll get to work from home! Cool, right?

Some Things You’ll Need to be Comfortable With:

  • Making WordPress sync data with common (and not so common) third-party REST & SOAP APIs

  • Crafting ingenious scripts to migrate datasets from outside systems, such as other CMSes, into WordPress, even when their character encoding isn’t what you want it to be

  • WordPress theming, including the template hierarchy, hooks, WP_Query, etc.

  • Finding existing libraries, plugins or other internal/external solutions to solve programming challenges, rather than reinventing the wheel

  • Deploying websites onto production hosts via git, rsync (and maybe sometimes sFTP), configuring caching, updating DNS records, and associated launch tasks

  • Quickly and effectively maintaining/troubleshooting/supporting code written by other developers

  • Command line tools like git, gulp, and wp-cli

  • JavaScript (particularly in jQuery)

  • Laughing at our stupid jokes (and the occasional good one)

  • Performing basic devops/Linux sysadmin tasks like writing bash scripts, configuring web or database servers, and figuring out why the “uploads don’t work!”

  • Troubleshooting MySQL performance issues (and writing performant queries)

  • Working in a fast-paced environment (we keep pretty busy!) and managing a workload of several projects at a time

  • Utilizing superb written and oral communication skills

Other stuff we’d love it if you’re good at, but aren’t requirements:

  • Working with and customizing Buddy/bbPress and WooCommerce

  • Drafting functional requirements that specify the appropriate technologies, techniques and architectures necessary to bring needed features to life

  • Working with other developers to implement the aforementioned plans

  • Not losing your s#!% when you occasionally get feedback like “Nevermind. We actually need that field that we told you not to migrate” (and then getting asked to change it back), which may happen despite our best efforts

  • Working with nonprofit CRM tools such as Salsa, Luminate Online, Engaging Networks, and Salesforce

  • Remembering to un-mute yourself before talking on conference calls

  • Being passionate about progressive causes

  • Writing custom CSS/SASS for cross-browser, responsive design (not just by using Bootstrap)

  • Configuring and/or maintaining AWS environments for hosting PHP-based websites and applications

  • Mucking around with Laravel
